ISDN PRI service is a service that provides 23 B channels for High Capacity voice services and 1D channel for special signaling between the telephone company’s central office (CO) and the customer’s location. The 23 B channels are essentially 23 pathways for simultaneous phone calls, whether inbound or outbound. One of the key differentiators between PRI service and voice T1 service is the one D Channel.
The ISDN PRI D channel is most commonly used to provide Caller ID. One unique feature of the Caller ID service on an ISDN PRI is the ability to retrieve caller information even from callers with Caller ID Blocking. Caller ID on a PRI is provided from the Automatic Number Identification (ANI) database. The ANI database consists of the caller’s billing number while normal Caller ID service broadcasts the calling number over the network. By utilizing the ANI, PRI bypasses the telephone company’s database and blocking features.
The Caller ID on a PRI can be integrated with the customer’s PBX and computer network to provide call routing to the correct department as well as screen pops. Screen pops cross reference the customer’s database with the number calling. They then post client information on the called party’s screen for instant access to the caller’s records.
